Insomnia and Causes
Most People Do Not Realize That There Can Be Psychological and Physiological Reasons For Insomnia

Many people that suffer from common sleep problems stress about insomnia and causes for it.  Insomnia is generally defined as difficulty in falling or staying asleep, the absence of restful sleep, or poor quality of sleep.  The term is most closely associated with the quality of sleep, and not the quantity of hours slept.  It can be caused by – and actually lead to - adverse health conditions.

Most common causes of insomnia are psychological or emotional.  Depression, anxiety and stress are the usual problems that people deal with when losing sleep.  Additionally, withdrawal from an addictive substance, and its effect on the conditions of physical and mental health, can cause the body and mind not to get the sleep it needs.

Insomnia can also be the result of health conditions.  Diabetes, kidney problems, anemia, gastro-intestinal problems and HIV are also common causes of sleep loss.  Often, the stress associated with these health issues cause the effected people additional stress to compound their insomnia.  Another health issue that many people deal with as they get older is apnea and other breathing disorders.  Apnea may cause someone to stop breathing for periods of time, and that may actually wake the person up.

Finally, there are environmental and lifestyle conditions that can cause the individual to lose sleep.  One of the common causes for insomnia is that the sleeping environment is just not conducive to a comfortable, deep rest.  People may have to deal with a noisy room, the body stress of being to hot or too cold, or there may be problems with sleep hygiene.  Jet leg and altitude changes can also be problematic.  Among the lifestyle issues that can cause insomnia are poor eating habits, poor general health, alcoholism, and nicotine and caffeine consumption.  An issue also thought to cause insomnia is one that we cannot avoid, and that is AGE.  Many medical studies have found that people sleep less as they grow older, and that it is primarily a result of waking up throughout the night for urination.
