CPAP Nose Mask
The Comfortable CPAP Option

The CPAP nose mask is a mask that is used with the continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, device as treatment for apnea patients.  Worn only over the nose and not the mouth, this mask is sometimes the preferred CPAP mask since it is less restrictive.  The nose mask facilitates the mission of the CPAP machine in exerting air pressure through the patient's airway so that it is not obstructed by the tongue or collapse.  Wearing a CPAP nose mask reduces snoring as well and reduces the effects of sleep apnea.

Some patients complain that wearing the nose mask for the CPAP is uncomfortable or it does not fit.  When this occurs, the patient should be informed that the nose mask is available in various sizes.  He or she should be directed to a qualified dealer who can assist them in being fitted for a nose mask or nasal pillows.  If this does not bring forth the desired results, then the patient should be directed in his or her other options for CPAP devices that are available.  These devices may include wearing the full face mask or wearing the nasal pillows.  If the patient complains of a dry or stuffy nose as a result of the dry air from the CPAP machine, he or she may try a humidifier to moisten the air.

Wearing the nose mask or nasal pillows is not a good option for patients who breathe through their mouths.  Since the nose mask only covers the nose, it does not meet the need of the apnea patient who is breathing through his or her mouth while sleeping.  In such cases, the patient may opt for wearing the full face mask, which covers the nasal area and mouth, for the CPAP or seek an alternative apnea treatment option that does not involve CPAP.  Some patients may complain of air pressure caused by the masks.  Pressure on the mouth area or nasal area can keep the patient from sleeping.

The CPAP machine is not a cure for sleep apnea, but it can greatly reduce the symptoms and incidences of the patient's apnea.  Finding the device that is most comfortable for the patient and allows him or her to get more restful and better quality sleep should be the goal of the physician and CPAP dealer.
