Baby Sleep Problems

Baby sleep problems are common especially in a newborn infant.  Baby newborn sleep problems generally occur because the infant is hungry or has a dirty diaper.  A baby should sleep often and in short intervals.  Newborn babies will awaken a lot more often for feeding time than an older child.  This is usually not a problem and is quite natural.  However, if you are having problems getting your baby to sleep at all you may want to change your routine a bit.  Sleeping problems in infant babies can occur because the sleeping routine is inconsistent.  This will become a problem for the newborn baby and for you because you will not be getting much sleep either.

Babies should be sleeping through the night at approximately four months old.  Prior to that, the infant may have problems soothing himself back to sleep.  If the baby is under four months old, there is likely not an issue.  If the child is older than five months, though, and is not sleeping, there may be a problem.  Talk to your pediatrician about your child and see if there are suggestions that can be put into place so both you and the child can have a full night’s restful sleep.
