Melatonin and Pregnancy
It Is Strongly Recommended That You Consult Your Physician Prior To Taking Melatonin If You Are Pregnant
Let's cut right to the chase on this topic of melatonin and pregnancy, and state right here
and now that information on pregnancy and melatonin treatment benefits is so inconclusive, you're strongly recommended to consult your physician
before creating this combination.
Melatonin is a normal hormone naturally created within the body, and it's secreted by the pineal gland (located in the midsection of the
brain) to assist with the different circadian cycles of night sleep. As a result, it's manufactured, sold, and used as a natural night
sleep disorder treatment for problems like insomnia. It's also used to
treat depression and weight problems. But the problem with using this night sleep treatment is that we just don't have any conclusive
information that shows us how it affects a normal pregnancy. Nor do we fully understand the implications that melatonin would have on a normal
developing fetus or infant.
During a healthy pregnancy, a woman's natural hormone levels are quite elevated and elevating another one (melatonin) could cause unknown
complications. In addition, we also don't have any significant information that points to how this hormone affects natural conception. A few
reports indicate high doses can actually work to prevent pregnancy. So if you're trying to conceive, consult your physician first before taking
melatonin supplements.
