Sleep Apnea Learning Disabilities
A Lack of Sleep May be Stopping Your Child From Achieving Their Full Potential

Sleep apnea learning disabilities may occur in a child who, because of sleep apnea, has trouble learning in school.  A sleep apnea learning disability may be caused by the disruptive sleep patterns children experience with apnea.  This is an obstructive disorder that causes airflow to be blocked while asleep.  Treatment of the sleep apnea will be helpful in allowing the children a more conducive atmosphere in which to be successful in their development.  Disabilities should be looked at by a child’s pediatrician and recommended treatment should be sought.  The disability may affect learning because the child is not getting a restful sleep.  The lack of a restful slumber may be obstructive to the child’s concentration and may be seen in the form of hyperactivity or sluggishness.

Disabilities of this sort in children can be frustrating for the parent and child.  The child may not be developing as expected and there may be additional behavioral problems that are seen.  Any learning disorder that is obstructive to a child’s education should be looked into as early as possible.  Treatment for the disorder will ease the strain on the child and allow the child to function better in a school environment.  The disability can be treated and improvement can be seen over a period of time.  If disabilities are present in a child, school officials, parents and the pediatrician should work together so the child can learn to cope with the disability.
