Prescription Sleep Aids
While Helpful in the Short Term Beware of Potential Long Term Problems

Prescription sleep aids are available with a doctor’s order.  If you feel you are one of the people who need prescription sleeping aids, contact your doctor to have an examination.  The doctor will examine you and discuss what alternatives you have.  Natural remedies like adjusting ambient lighting in the room may help. Sleep aids such as pills or drugs can be temporary solutions to sleeping problems.  However, you will not typically want to use prescription sleep aids over a long term because there is evidence you may become dependent on them over time.  It may be safer for people to look at available ambient solutions first before looking at drugs or prescription pills for sleep aids.  Ambient solutions may include shutting the shades and ensuring the room is completely dark.  You may also find sleeping with available soothing noises helpful.

Sleeping is something that people need to stay healthy.  If it is necessary to take drugs or pills in order to get some rest, then you will need to do that as long as possible so you get the required amount of slumber each night.  If you do not, you will have problems during the day that will affect your work, home or school life adversely.  Contact your physician if you feel you have a chronic condition that needs a more intense type of treatment.
