End Stage COPD

The ending stage COPD ( chronic obstructive pulmonary disease )is the one that comes after the actual last stages, or stages of COPD. End stage COPD is very severe COPD and it truly changes the quality of life for the patient due to shortness of breath. The fourth stage of COPD, which is severe, is life threatening, but the ending stage is even more life threatening. This chronic ending stage is where the patient will most likely die from the obstructive pulmonary disease.

COPD, along with chronic Asthma, is the fourth highest cause of death in America. More than 90,000 deaths are reported each year from these two diseases. Elderly men seem to be at the highest risk of death from the pulmonary disease. COPD is an obstructive disease where the airflow is greatly reduced, and in some cases completely cut off, which results in death. It is a progressive disease with stages, and many sufferers find that their sleep is disrupted by the symptoms, which also results in fatigue.

COPD is preventable, and if caught early it can be effectively treated. Most patients are cigarette smokers, and of course smoking cessation is the first key to preventing and treating the disease. Although the condition can be treated, there is no cure. However, the progression of the disease can be greatly slowed when the patient follows the doctor’s orders to stop smoking. In fact, research has shown that people who show early signs of COPD and immediately stop smoking often go on to live long and healthy lives in spite of the COPD condition.
