What is the Cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

The cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome cannot be easily and neatly summarized due to the fact that there may be many different causes to be chronically fatigued. The causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are quite varied and may be the result of continual underlying health problems. In many cases, the continual health problem may never be found at all. In fact, many physicians still do not recognize CFS as an actual illness!

Many research scientists believe that CFS can be caused by genetic factors, a dysfunctional immune system, viral infections, psychological conditions, and brain abnormalities or chemical imbalances. Some believe that just one of those conditions, or a combination cause CFS. What researchers have found is that in almost all cases, there is at least one underlying health condition that causes the constant chronically fatigued feeling and continual exhaustion in patients.

While opinions vary widely on the actual causes of the syndrome, patient symptoms are usually identical from one person to the next – extreme fatigue and constant exhaustion are the most common complaints, followed by aching muscles. But CFS is only diagnosed when a person is chronically fatigued, usually for a period of six months or more. What this means is that it may take quite a bit of time before actual treatment for the symptoms of CFS are started.

If you feel constant fatigue, you should seek the advice of a healthcare professional to determine whether or not you have CFS. Do not make the mistake of assuming that you do have CFS and that it will go away on its own. Treatment is necessary, and without that treatment, the symptoms of CFS will only become worse.
