Effects of Lack of Sleep
The effects of lack of sleep range from mild problems to serious consequences and health
problems. The most common effect of lack of sleep is of course fatigue – which can often be cured by
getting a good night’s rest. However, for many people, this is much easier said than actually done, and there are many detrimental results or
consequences when you are lacking sleep.
Lack of sleeping or rest is one of the results of snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, or stress that prevents one from sleeping through the night. In the case of
teenagers and young children, the simple fact that they don’t want to go to sleep for fear of missing out on something is common, and is not
usually an indication of a sleeping disorder. However, in the case of adults, lack of sleep is not usually a choice.
Lacking Rest-Effect and Consequences
Many people don’t realize it, but effect or results of continued lack of sleep can be death. Sleep is required to regenerate portions of the
brain, and lacking this regeneration – which only occurs during sleep – the brain stops functioning normally. The immune system is weakened by
lack of sleep as well, and with a weakened immune system, a person becomes susceptible to all sorts of health problems.
If you are being deprived of sleep for reasons that are beyond your control, you should seek medical advice and treatment as soon as possible.
The longer you are deprived of sleep, the more damage can be done to your body and your brain. A sleep study may need to be done to determine
what is causing your lack of sleep.
