CPAP Therapy is Very Effective in Treating Sleep Apnea
At This Time it is the Most Effective Treatment Available

Sleep apnea CPAP therapy is, at this time, the most effective apnea treatment available.  It uses increased air pressure that is forced through the airway to eliminate obstructions that would cause the patient to stop breathing during sleep.  CPAP treatment is used to help apnea patients sleep better and to be able to breathe during sleep.  This has many health benefits that extend beyond the apnea disorder.  Sleep deprivation can cause a person to have health problems, be irritable and experience decreased productivity.  As air is forced through the nasal airway, apnea patients report more restful and refreshing sleep.

The CPAP devices that facilitate the air pressure through the airway are the face mask, the nasal mask and nasal pillows.  Each of these works to keep the air pressure moving through the airway while the patient sleeps.  A CPAP machine is often favored over surgery as the patient’s health is not at as much risk and there is no recovery period as there would be with surgery.  The only health risks associated with use of CPAP therapy are the air pressure through the nasal airway being too forceful and electrical shock if the unit becomes wet.

Some patients may find the masks used with the CPAP to be uncomfortable, but there are several different manufacturers of masks, different mask sizes as well as different mask types.  Apnea patients should work with a CPAP specialist to find a mask that fits their face and needs.  Some patients also complain of discomfort when trying to sleep while wearing the mask.  It may be necessary for the patient to gradually work up to wearing the mask all night by beginning with an hour or so a night until he or she becomes accustomed to it.

Overall, the CPAP is an effective therapy for the treatment of sleep apnea disorder.  Patients who have used the machine report fewer instances of sleep deprivation and more restful, refreshing sleep.  They also indicate that they have much more energy during the day and are more productive.  CPAP patients enjoy improved health since they are no longer suffering the effects of sleep deprivation that stems from their sleep apnea.
