The Exact Causes of Restless Legs Syndrome Are Unknown

Treatment is Available

You might have seen the new television commercials that introduce rls symptoms. These commercials show the translucent legs of sitting persons (age unknown) resting on a lazy-boy. But the imagery inside of the legs suggest a sensation that's far from restful. Restless legs syndrome is as common as insomnia, however this disorder is characterized by symptoms of pain or irritating sensation in the legs and an irresistible desire to move them. RLS feelings range from burning or crawling to itching, and no one knows what the exact causes of restless legs syndrome are. We are however, aware of treatment for restless legs syndrome because we're getting close to determining *some* of its causes.

One suspected cause is anemia and when the iron levels in some anemic RLS victims are raised, restless legs syndrome seems to subside. Other suspected causes of restless legs syndrome are diabetes, kidney failure, Parkinson's disease, and peripheral neuropathy - but not insomnia. Once these conditions are treated, RLS again, appears to subside. Even pregnant women in their last trimester have reported RLS symptoms, which subside all on their own after delivery. In this latter stage of pregnancy, women are less prone to vigorous movement - movement that most RLS victims report as immediate relief. Insomnia does not appear to be related to RLS.

Of course, most RLS victims find an immediate relief and treatment from this bizarre phenomenon by getting up and moving. Even though this alleviation is temporary, movement can alleviate the bizarre sensation of RLS right away, however clonazepam is showing promising results on a more permanent basis.
