Melatonin Drug Interaction - The Safety of Melatonin Is High As Long As You Don't Mix With Other Drugs or
Alcohol
Unlike herbal supplements found from plant life, melatonin is a normal hormone naturally
created within the human body, and it's secreted by the pineal gland (located in the midsection of the brain) to assist with the different
circadian cycles of night sleep. As a result, it's manufactured, sold, and recommended as a drowsiness inducement to treat health problems like
insomnia. Because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hasn't regarded melatonin as a drug, it also
hasn't established any information that identifies its side effects.
This does not suggest however, that taking melatonin comes without proper health caution, adverse risk, or safety concerns. Safety facts and
adverse risks surrounding melatonin drug interaction and supplement combination are too new to ignore - and by dismissing them, you may place the
safety of your melatonin use at risk.
Because melatonin is used to induce drowsiness, under no circumstance, should melatonin be taken during work conditions, while operating
machinery, or while consuming alcohol or some other drug. The combination of melatonin, alcohol or other drug could create an adverse interaction
that ranges from a minor inability to sleep to a more complicated health risk including death.
For example, the combination and interaction between melatonin and a drug like Prozac intensifies melatonin production and can cause excessive
drowsiness. Iron (as a supplement) has been shown to reduce both melatonin production and its effects. The risk involved is just too great and
necessitates consultation with a physician.
