Sleep Apnea Learning Disabilities
Recent news reports describe evidence of sleep apnea learning disabilities and sleep disorders in small children. According to experts, there appears to be a direct correlation between kids with learning
and/or behavioral disabilities/disorders and kids who suffer from sleep apnea.
This correlation points out why it's so important for parents to address both sleep apnea and learning difficulties in kids. Since sleep apnea
is known to briefly reduce the normal level of oxygen in kids, almost every brain function including normal learning functions, behavioral
functions, and memory is put at risk. And without getting this proper amount of oxygen, kids suffering from sleep apnea academically test a small
percentage lower than normal.
It's further suggested that sleep apnea may play a role in behavioral disorders like hyperactivity and adhd as well. Studies show that a
significant number of school-aged children who have been diagnosed with some kind of mood disorder additionally suffer from sleep apnea
difficulties as well.
It's tough enough to deal with the difficulties of sleep apnea, let alone low core academics and related activities. But it's central that as
parents, we learn everything we can about sleep apnea and its treatment so that our
children can intellectually compete with the rest of their class.
