Side Effects Of Taking Melatonin

As part of a natural health remedy, many people have taken interest in the melatonin tablet as a medical sleep therapy regime for problems like insomnia or jet lag. Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the pineal gland. But as natural as melatonin is, concerns about melatonin, its benefits, and its side effects remain. Although a large percent of people swear by the benefits of melatonin, information about the side effects of taking melatonin is relatively scarce. This is because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn't regulate this hormone supplement. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn't regard melatonin as a drug, and therefore hasn't established any information that identifies its side effects.

Another problem of determining melatonin's side effects is the way that melatonin seemingly affects the health of a large group of people. Melatonin seems to affect some people differently than it affects others - and this difference of course strongly depends on the dosage. In some studies, melatonin had no effect on sleeping disorders, while for others, melatonin clearly revealed benefits and made a significance difference between insomnia and the ability to sleep. Some people have even reported mild cases of depression, low sex drive, headaches, or nightmares.

Until taking melatonin for insomnia is tested in a controlled health environment, and these tests yield some significant information, we really have no way of knowing what the unfavorable implications are. Negative reactions to melatonin are at this point and time rather suspect, and quite possibly related to other health issues independent of melatonin.
