The Cause of Sleep Apnea
There are May Variables that You and Your Doctor May Have to Examine
The cause of sleep apnea can vary depending on the person. Many people
wonder, “what are the causes of sleep apnea?” Sleep apnea is a fairly common problem where an
obstructive airway causes breathing problems. In addition to an obstructive airway, respiratory disease and nervous system disorders may
also cause sleep apnea. One in five adults have the breathing problem and over forty million Americans go undiagnosed with the
affliction. There are also many symptoms related to the cause of the disease. Anyone who experiences these common symptoms may want
to consult a physician to get checked out in case a diagnosis of sleep apnea is necessary.
Frequent wakening because breathing due to an obstructive airway is one of the common symptoms that can be found and causes the sleep
apnea. Another cause is choking or gasping during sleep that may indicate a problem. Loud
snoring is one of the most common side effects of this obstructive airway problem. Breathing is labored and this causes the person to
snore excessively. Headaches, lethargy, sleepiness during the day, depression and mood swings are other side effects that may cause the
sleeping disorder.
Although there are several causes and symptoms for the disorder, there are also effective treatments available that will help the person
suffering from apnea be more comfortable and have a good night’s rest. A physician should make a thorough examination of the person to
ensure a proper diagnosis. At that time, there may be treatment options that are discussed. Medication may be prescribed and the use
of a breathing machine might also be required. A CPAP machine is commonly used to help
with the disorder. A CPAP will flow air into the airway so that the blockage is removed and the patient is better able to sleep. It
will also help the loved ones who may often be awakened by the loud snoring. The CPAP will take some getting used to but most patients see
immediate relief from their sleep problems upon using the device.
