Infant Sleep Apnea
Infant sleep apnea can be and is a very scary prospect for parents. Sleep apnea in babies is not very common but it does occur and may be linked to sudden infant death
syndrome or SIDS. Sleep apnea in babies is often characterized by excessive snoring or turning a bluish color and becoming limp when
sleeping. It is often mistaken for sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS but in sleep apnea with babies, they may have several bouts and
still survive. With sudden infant death syndrome, however, babies are not generally saved. SIDS is often related to sleep apnea in
babies but there is no evidence of a direct correlation. If your baby experiences snoring while asleep it is advisable to get the baby
checked with your pediatrician to rule out a severe problem.
When the baby is snoring, observe the movements and actions to see if the baby actually stops breathing during any time in the process.
A pediatrician may have the baby sleep with an apnea monitor to see if that problem is the cause. If it is, there are treatments available
and it is important to get it treated as early as possible to prevent further complications. If you have a history of sleeping disorders in your family, you may also want to get the baby checked as there has been a link to the problem and
heredity.
